As of my last update in September 2021, there was no specific law referred to as the “California balcony law.” However, California does have building codes and regulations related to balcony construction and safety.

Following several balcony collapses in the state, California enacted Senate Bill 721 in 2018, which mandates regular inspections of apartment balconies to ensure their structural integrity. This bill applies to multi-family residential buildings with exterior elevated elements, such as balconies, decks, and stairways. Property owners are required to conduct inspections of these structures every few years and address any identified safety issues promptly.

It is essential to note that laws and regulations can change over time, so I recommend checking with official California state websites or consulting a legal professional to get the most current and accurate information on balcony-related laws in California.

BASECRETE is a complete waterproofing and concrete bondcoat system that contractors, painters, building owners and hotels can use in order to bring their decks and rooftop spaces into compliance with CA Rule SB-721.  The best part about Basecrete is that it’s simple to apply and all Sherwin Williams locations sell Basecrete.
