As of my last update in September 2021, there was no specific law referred to as the “California balcony law.” However, California does have building codes and regulations related to balcony construction and safety.
Following several balcony collapses in the state, California enacted Senate Bill 721 in 2018, which mandates regular inspections of apartment balconies to ensure their structural integrity. This bill applies to multi-family residential buildings with exterior elevated elements, such as balconies, decks, and stairways. Property owners are required to conduct inspections of these structures every few years and address any identified safety issues promptly.
